1877: Vor dem Hintergrund des osmanisch-russischen Krieges wird das Hin und Her des Kriegsverlaufes als ein Spiel aus Geheim-, Doppel- und sonstigen Agenten geschildert. Wie ein großes Schachspiel, eben ein "türkisches Gambit". Bei der Flucht aus dem türkischen Gefangenenlager erfährt Erast Fandorin, ein junger russischer Offizier und Geheimagent seiner Majestät, dass die türkische Armee einen Angriff plant. Möglichst schnell versucht er dem Generalstab seine Kenntnisse vom türkischen Schlachtplan zu übermitteln. Dabei trifft er auf die hübsche Varvara Suvorova, die ebenfalls zum russischen Hauptquartier will, um ihren Verlobten, ein russischer Soldat, zu treffen. Als sie gemeinsam das Lager erreichen und Fandorin die geheime Nachricht überbringt, wird diese manipuliert. Schnell wird klar, dass es in den eigenen Reihen einen türkischen Spion gibt.
